SUMMER INTERNSHIP DIARIES: DRIVING GROWTH THROUGH DATA, STRATEGY AND EXECUTION
“The most meaningful business decisions are not driven by data alone. They begin with understanding people, asking better questions and transforming insights into purposeful action. My summer at Vodafone Idea Limited showed me how classroom learning becomes real business impact.”
When I began my MBA at BITSoM, I was introduced to frameworks that explained how businesses make decisions, how customers behave and how organisations create value. Through courses in Marketing, Consumer Behaviour, Business Analytics, and Strategy, along with case discussions and collaborative projects, I learned to approach problems from multiple perspectives. While these concepts provided structure, I often wondered what it would feel like to apply them to challenges where there was no textbook answer. My summer internship at Vodafone Idea Limited became the opportunity to bridge that gap between classroom learning and business reality.
As part of the Vi Leadership Program (ViLP), I worked on strategic digital growth initiatives focused on accelerating Vi App adoption and customer engagement. What surprised me most was where the learning began. Before analysing dashboards or campaign performance, I spent time visiting retail stores, interacting with customers and frontline teams, conducting surveys and interviews, and understanding the reasons behind customer behaviour. Those conversations reminded me that every business metric represents a real person, and every customer journey tells a story that data alone cannot fully explain. Concepts like customer centricity, which we had explored in class, became tangible as I saw how understanding customer needs could influence business outcomes.
As the internship progressed, my role evolved from understanding customer problems to solving them.. I worked across customer journey optimisation, digital campaigns, app engagement, GTM recommendations for the Vi × Spotify partnership, customer engagement initiatives for the Vi × CSK partnership, and the development of a long term Vi App Growth Playbook. Every project required balancing customer expectations with business priorities while collaborating across Digital, Brand, Martech, Analytics, CVM, Digital Services, and Category teams. It was fascinating to see how different functions aligned around a common objective and how strategy only creates value when it is translated into execution.
Looking back, I realised how deeply my first year at BITSoM had prepared me for these experiences. Consumer Behaviour helped me understand customer motivations beyond the numbers. Marketing strengthened my thinking around segmentation and positioning, while Business Analytics enabled me to interpret customer journeys and campaign performance with confidence. Equally valuable were the classroom discussions, live projects, and team assignments that strengthened my ability to communicate ideas, navigate ambiguity, and collaborate effectively with people from diverse backgrounds. These were the skills I found myself relying on every day during the internship.
As I return to campus for my second year, I carry back much more than professional experience. I return with a deeper appreciation for customer first thinking, structured problem solving, and collaborative leadership. More importantly, I now understand that the true value of an MBA lies not only in learning frameworks, but in developing the judgement to apply them in complex business situations. My summer at Vodafone Idea Limited reinforced that meaningful growth begins with understanding people, and that is a lesson I will carry with me throughout my career.
